I can’t find the picture I was looking for to illustrate this move I want you to learn, so I’m just going to describe it:
Start by kneeling, slowly, mindfully, gracefully, keep your arms straight but relaxed as you’re going down, do not put your hands out until your knees are very nearly on the floor, lower yourself elegantly straight down, don’t hurl yourself down in a heap. Place your hands palms down on the tops of your knees to finish. We’ll call this ‘kneeling’.
Sit up on your toes, ankles together, knees just a hand’s width apart, hands on the tops of your legs until told otherwise. This is ‘kneeling up’.
If I say ‘arch your back’, I mean put your hands forward first -slowly, mindfully and beautifully, no flinging your limbs around unaware like a messy slut. Put your hands down shoulder length in front of you, then lean forward so that your shoulders are directly above your hands, back diagonal to the floor. Pause a moment, and you may look at me to check I’m watching: now put your right hand forward, gracefully like a cat, and then your left. Raise your bum as high in the air as you can, and stretch your back upwards as high as you can and hold for a count of six. Then lower your head so that the base of your neck is below your shoulders, and arch your back downwards, slowly, and show it off. Keeping your bottom high and your head low, possibly brushing your cheek against the fur if that’s what you’re on, arch your back as deeply as you can, and you may wiggle your bum at me. This is ‘Cat Stretch’ pose, a form of presenting.
Downward Dog for our purposes is another way of getting into Cat Stretch pose for presenting, where I want to see more emphasis on presenting your bum, rather than the emphasis on seeing you arching your back and showing off your hourglass curves, and your gorgeous bum.
